Skill of the Week

A while back, I used to write a weekly blast email titled “Skill of the Week.” Each skill was specifically tailored to test “reading skills” aligned with the Nevada State Standards and our old CRT. The intention was to make students familiar with the testing format, increasing their chances of answering questions correctly. In other words, considering cognitive load theory, which suggests that students can only process a certain amount of information at once, being acquainted with the question stems would reduce the strain on students’ working memory.

I’m continuing this approach this year by creating experiences aligned with Smarter Balanced, using the question stems they use.
